Horticulture

The mission of the Horticulture Program is:

  • To provide quality programs for members of the commercial horticulture community, with an emphasis on integrated pest management (IPM), pesticide training, and innovative, localized research.
  • To help Rensselaer County consumers maintain and improve their homes and grounds using environmentally-sound horticultural practices.
  • To create a dynamic Master Gardener program, which fosters leaders and teachers willing to share their knowledge with the community

Events

Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 4-8pm. A self-driven, self-guided tour of home gardens in the Averill Park and West Sand Lake areas. Held rain or shine. Visit these private, often hidden garden and see what other Rensselaer County gardeners are up to. Admission $10 per person (up to $30 per car for 3 or more people). Maps sold June 14 at Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, Wynantskill, NY 12198 AND St. Henry's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Old Route 66/CR 45, Averill Park, NY  12018. For more information call 272-4210.
Tuesday, June 19, 2012 from 7-8 pm. Come and learn how to easily create and utilize compost - the extra-special soil additive. Held at the Demonstration Garden,  The Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, Wynantskill. Admission is FREE.
The Horticulture Program is seeking artists to participate in the juried art show and sale entitled “Art In The Garden,” to be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 10am - 4pm.  This event will take place at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden located at the Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, North Greenbush, NY.  Art can include but is not limited to pottery, sculpture, jewelry, woodworking, paintings, collage and textiles.  There is free admission to the public and the event is held rain or shine.  To become a vendor, submit a completed Vendor Contract and Release Form  to David Chinery at dhc3@cornell.edu   



Wednesday, July 25 from 7-8pm. Learn from the successes and failures of a Master Gardener who has tried and triumphed in "going small". You'll enjoy easy maintenance, space efficiency and high productivity all while bringing "farm fresh" into your backyard. Held at the Demonstration Garden at the Robert C. Parker School, 4254 Route 43, Wynantskill. Admission is FREE.
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 7-8 pm. Our team of Master Gardeners will point out how herbs can be grown, what they are used for and how they can be picked, preserved and stored. Our herb garden is divided into culinary, wellness/household, tea and salad dressing beds. Held at the Demonstration Garden at the Robert C Parker School, 4254 Route 43, Wynantskill. Admission is FREE.
