Horticulture

The mission of the Horticulture Program is:

  • To provide quality programs for members of the commercial horticulture community, with an emphasis on integrated pest management (IPM), pesticide training, and innovative, localized research.
  • To help Rensselaer County consumers maintain and improve their homes and grounds using environmentally-sound horticultural practices.
  • To create a dynamic Master Gardener program, which fosters leaders and teachers willing to share their knowledge with the community

Events

February 7,8 9,14,15,16: 9:00am - 3:00PM This course is offered as part of the training requirements needed for people seeking to become certified as pesticide technicians in category 3a OR certified as a private applicator in category 25 by the NYSDEC. Registration fee $350.00. Registration deadline is February 1st or when class is filled. Classes held at CCE office, 61 State Street, Troy, NY.

The first of our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons Classes, this program will teach you how to pair flowers and vegetables with decor, choose focal points, and evaluate what to use where.  Thursday, February 23 at 7:00 PM at the CCE office located at 61 State Street, Troy, NY.  Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee.

 

February 28, 2012 - 9:00am - 2:00pm. Topics covered in this training include: Organic Weed Management Update, Tough Plants for Tough Places: Choosing Plants that Thrive Without Pesticides, Soil Testing and Soil Test Interpretation, and Common Tree and Shrub Pest Problems: Identification and Management. Registration fee is $40 per person. Registration Deadline is February 24 or when class is filled. This class  will provide 4 hours of continuing education for persons already enrolled as service providers in the Be Green Organic Yards NY program.
The second of our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons Classes, we'll explore soil conditions, varieties, sources, planting, feeding, pruning, harvesting and everything else you can think of related to growing blueberries.  Held at the CCE office at 61 State Street, Troy, NY on Tuesday, March 6 starting at 7:00 PM.  Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee.
March 10, 2012 Join us for Spring Garden Day. A celebration of gardening in Rensselaer County and the Captial District.  Choose from 15 different gardening subject classes, enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the Master Gardeners, shop for bargains at our used book and plant sale.  Taking place at Tamarac/Brunswick High School from 8:45 AM -3:30 PM.
The third of our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons Classes, our Master Gardeners will show you how to make these fun and easy planters at home.  They will also discuss casting leaves from large-leaved plants like hostas and elephant-ears.  Held at the CCE office at 61 State Street, Troy, NY on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 PM.  Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee.
This is the fifth event in our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons programs.  Roses are beautiful but have the reputation of being difficult to grow.  However, with a little know-how about their selection, planting, pruning and care, you can have success!  Held at the CCE office (61 State Street, Troy, NY) on April 12 starting at 7:00 PM. Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee. 
This is the sixth program in our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons series.  Popular in Victorian times and again in the 1970's, terrariums, or gardens under glass, are making a comeback today.  Our Master Gardeners will show you how to make one in this live demonstration.  Held at the CCE office, 61 State Street, Troy, NY on April 26 at 7:00 PM. Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee. 
This is the seventh and final class in our 2012 Gardening Through The Seasons class series.  We'll discuss what's bugging you and your garden, touching upon the top weeds, insects, diseases and more, with an emphasis on the most common problems in the greater Rensselaer County area.  Held at the CCE office, 61 State Street, Troy, NY on May 9 starting at 7:00 PM.  Pre-registration is requested (admission at door only if space is available) and there is a $6.00 per person fee.
